It’d been festering in his head for days. Or had it been over a week? He could no longer recall the day, only the moment those colorful remarks had found his ears by mistake—a conversation that had taken far too much liberty with its content. The rooms of die Neue Reichskanzlei were echo chambers, and words tended to race unabated through its vast, red granite halls. Secrets needed only one open door.

And only one unseen, unintended recipient on the other side.

It’s there, resting on her breath. She doesn’t think it is but he can smell it. That sharp, assertive layer of mint almost makes it worse. The two scents don’t mingle honorably. In fact, they don’t mingle at all—translucent peppermint hastily tossed over black nicotine. It’s unconvincing. It’s insulting.

It’s a lie and that’s what hurts.

⏵   "the end justifies the means, even when the end is forcing an apology out of a certain someone"

⏵   draft: in production

Given the choice, any choice, she was supposed to choose him. No matter the circumstances. No matter the inconvenience or the lack of notice. She had promised, in so many words, that he was the most important thing in her world. If there had been any truth behind those words, then she would’ve thought longer and harder on how to ditch her plans. Even if it had only come to amount to rudeness. What was a little rudeness in the end? Nothing that couldn’t be fixed, that couldn’t be forgiven. But time with him could not be recovered. Once it was thrown away, it was gone.

She was well aware of this. Painfully so even. And she’d chosen her promise to Frau Schwarz over her promise to him.
